When you speak about some of the most unforgettable Hollywood movies some names crop up universally. Some for visual effects like Avatar, Jurassic Park , Lord of the Rings or some for drama like Shawshank Redemption and Godfather or some for sheer brilliance in concept like Matrix or Inception…and I must add a disclaimer that these are just a few random names just give you the drift.
And with these movies came the actors.I wonder if the movie made them great actors or was it their acting ability that made the movie great?
There are however a few actors over the years that have blurred this differentiation. In Hollywood it would certainly be the likes of Robert De Niro, Meryl Streep,Jhonny Depp,Al Pacino,Jack Nicholson or even Kevin Spacey…again disclaimer applies as above.
Other than Hollywood in America, there are a few movie producing nations around the globe which can lay claim to this statement ,Korea, China,Thailand,France,Poland to name a few.But none bigger than the Indian Film Industry. I refuse to address it as Bollywood – which sounds like a spoof of some Hollywood movie…like Spaceballs was for Star Wars.
I am sure every movie fan outside of Hollywood, would vouch how his favorite star would have been the top star in Hollywood.I am no different.
Amitabh Bachchan is one such actor, and mind you there have been quite a few good ones over the years, who dilutes, blurs, transcends most boundaries as an actor par excellence,as an ambassador par excellence. Therefore the innate desire to see him share the same screen space with other legends. Most of the directors in the Indian film Industry, current crop specially, have grown up in awe of Mr.Bachchan, therefore directing him border lines on a fantasy for most, and I speculate here, that they quite dont know what to do with him. Naseeruddin Shah, one of the finest, had once commented the same about himself. And I completely agree.
In the interest of Art, Cinema, Joy, brilliance,Posterity and even Box Office, one wishes to see these screen gods on one screen someday. Hollywood you have no idea what talent you are missing out on.This certainly does not mean that the Indian Film Industry is not doing justice to Mr.Bachchan – they have and will continue to do so in full earnest. But as a movie lover,I would love to see a Steven Spielberg or a Brian D’ Palma direct Mr.Bachchan in a pivotal role.
As they have it in the so called Fantasy sports, where you get to chose your dream team, here’s mine –
Scripts/roles that best suit Mr.Bachchan’s personae, at this point, are the likes of Morgan Freeman in Shawshank,Gandalf in Lord of the rings,Anthony Hopkins and Silence of the Lambs etc. Directors who capture human emotions the best, are more likely to strike a chord with Mr.Bachchan’s capabilities.
I know there are probably a 100 articles being written about Mr.Bachchan as I write this piece , but a true fan never gives up. This is written with a sense of gratitude towards Mr.Bachchan who has entertained us for the last 40 years , so it does not matter if no one reads this, or even if 100 people read it , his brilliance will last forever.Like they say, the statement of truth does not change by the number of people follow it.
So if Hollywood missed Amitabh Bachchan, its not our loss alone.
